Preliminary Discussion on the Sea Water Quality Status in the 2008 Olympics Boat-sailing Field and Adjacent Area. OceanDocs
Shi, Xiaoyong; Chen, Lili; Zhu, Chenjian; Wang, Xiulin.
A cruise of survey in the 2008 Olympics boat-sailing field and adjacent area was carried out on August 28th, 2003. Preliminarily analysis on the eutrophication status was made on the basis of the content of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphate (PO4-P),dissolved oxygen(DO) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) as well. The results indicated that in most of the survey area, water quality was in accordance with the 1st class National Seawater Standard except the average concentration of petroleum hydrocarbon which was beyond the 2nd class National Seawater Standard. The concentrations of PO4-P as well as DIN were mainly influenced by the runoff or drainage from lands, with a comparatively higher concentration in the coastal areas from...

Preliminary results from POLMAR III (April 13-18, 1978) (SUROIT III) ATP, primary production and respiration rates in zooplankton. Complément à la Communication du Groupe Ecophysiologie du Centre Océanologique de Bretagne (SAMAIN et al.) ArchiMer
Hendrikson, P.; Hirche, H.j.; Junghans,, U..
ATP, primary production and respiration rates in seston, respiration rates in zooplankton have been investigated after the spill by "AMOCO CADIZ". Gross primary production seems to be similar to the normal situation. The rate of photosynthesis is lower at the "AMOCO CADIZ" station than at any of the others. Respiration rates are surprisingly high at the surface. ATP concentration exhibit an homogeneous pattern, zooplankton respiration are similar to the data obtained in Peruvian upwelled waters or in zooplankton culture. A more detailed computation of data will be necessary before concluding.

Pseudo-imposex: male features in female volutes not TBT-induced (Gastropoda: Volutidae) Naturalis
Swennen, C.; Horpet, P..
The occurrence of a penis in female gastropods of the superfamily Muricoidea (infraorder Neogastropoda) has commonly been accepted as an indicator of tributyltin (TBT) pollution. Some species seem less sensitive than others, and one belonging to the family Columbellidae has been reported that it lacks the imposex response. During a survey in South-east Asian waters, females of Cymbiola nobilis and Melo melo (family Volutidae) with a small penis and an external vas deferens were initially considered as showing imposex. Doubt arose when 100% of the females had a penis on sites where other gastropods showed no or a low imposex incidence. During the present study, several hypotheses could be rejected such as (1) that the volutes are extremely sensible for TBT;...

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of contaminating hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Santiago de Cuba by gas chromatography Boletín de Investigaciones
Mesa Mesa,Liliana; Falcón Hernández,José; Mulet De los Reyes,Alexander; Castellanos González,Juan Ramón.
ABSTRACT The coasts of Cuba are exposed to damage caused by the contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons. The coastal strip of the Gulf of Santiago de Cuba is an example of natural resources deterioration due to this contamination, which appears as one of its main environmental problems. In the present work, using gas chromatography, quantitative and qualitative analysis were performed based on the retention time values and the area under the chromatogram curve, which allowed characterizing the degree of contamination at four points of the bay of Santiago de Cuba: playa La Estrella (P1), “Guillermón Moncada” Port (P2) “Hermanos Díaz” Oil Refinery (P3), “Antonio Maceo” Thermoelectric Power Plant RENTE (P4). Retention times of individual peaks in...

RECYCLING, INTERNATIONAL TRADE, AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF POLLUTION: THE EFFECT OF INCREASED U.S. PAPER RECYCLING ON U.S. IMPORT DEMAND FOR CANADIAN PAPER AgEcon
Michael, Jeffrey A..
The quantity of paper recycled in the U.S. has more than doubled since 1985. International trade theory predicts that this will lead to reduced imports of paper, and a shift in domestic production toward waste paper intensive outputs (e.g., newsprint) and away from higher grade products such as printing/writing paper. Import demand elasticities with respect to input prices were estimated for newsprint, printing/writing, and all paper utilizing 20 years of monthly data. The empirical results confirm the predictions of theory, and illustrate a channel through which recycling may be more beneficial for U.S. industry than the domestic environment.

Regulating Stock Externalities Under Uncertainty AgEcon
Newell, Richard G.; Pizer, William A..
Using a simple analytical model incorporating benefits of a stock, costs of adjusting the stock, and uncertainty in costs, we uncover several important principles governing the choice of price-based policies (e.g., taxes) relative to quantity-based policies (e.g., tradable permits) for controlling stock externalities. Applied to the problem of greenhouse gases and climate change, we find that a price-based instrument generates several times the expected net benefits of a quantity instrument. As in Weitzman (1974), the relative slopes of the marginal benefits and costs of controlling the externality continue to be critical determinants of the efficiency of prices relative to quantities, with flatter marginal benefits and steeper marginal costs favoring...

Regulatory Responses to Potential Pollutants from Animal Feeding Operations: Opting Out of Costly Permitting Regulations AgEcon
Centner, Terence J.; Mullen, Jeffrey D..
Because of excessive water impairment, federal and state agencies have enacted regulations to reduce water pollution from animal feeding operations. Many of the regulations are based on numbers of animals rather than the potential of an operator to impair water quality. To enhance efficiency, critical production indicators and location screening factors might be used to exempt operations that are not significantly impairing water quality. In this manner, regulations could avoid imposing unnecessary costs on the regulated public and more effectively target monitoring and enforcement resources of the regulatory agency.

Report of the study group on pollution affecting shellfish in aquaculture and natural populations - 1992 ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice.
In La Rochelle (october 1991) the following recommendations of consultative committee approved by the delegates meeting for this study group were : Attention was drawn to the fact that the study group on Pollution Meeting Shellfish in Aquaculture and Natural Populations (C.Res. 1991/2 : 45) was one of the council's first attempts to investigate the effect of pollution on fisheries. Delegates were encouraged to ensure a better representation of proper experts at the 1992 meeting since the 1991 meeting had been poorly attended. The recommendations from the Shellfish Committee were adopted by the council as C.Res. 1992/2 : 45 jointly with MEQC, Mariculture and ACMP.
